Why you think you’re right, even when you’re wrong

Editor's Note: Interesting article on our decision making processes and how we tend to view the world with bias.  Considering today's political environment, this article should help us step back and pause, regardless of which side we favor. By Julia Galef,  TED  | Repost Are you a soldier or a scout? Your answer to this question, says decision-making expert Julia Galef, could determine how clearly you see the world. Imagine for a moment you’re a soldier in the heat of battle — perhaps a Roman foot soldier, medieval archer or Zulu warrior. Regardless of your time and place, some things are probably constant. Your adrenaline is elevated, and your actions stem from your deeply ingrained reflexes, reflexes that are rooted in a need to protect yourself and your side and to defeat the enemy. Now, try to imagine playing a very different role: the scout. The scout’s job is not to attack or defend; it’s to understand. The scout is the one going out, mapping the terrain,...

The Vital 3 Feet to Achievement

The Vital 3 Feet to Achievement ~Art of Manliness | Repost Art of Manliness’ note:  The following selection on “The Vital Three Feet to Achievement” comes from The Technique of Building Personal Leadership (1944) by Donald A. Laird. It has been condensed from the original chapter. For many years I have kept a magic rule on my desk. It has literally been worth more than its weight in gold to me. When I have an impulse to quit, this rule keeps me at work. When I become discouraged, it whispers encouragement. When I stop too long to watch the river, the rule calls me back. It all started back in the Colorado gold rush. A small-town Marylander was bit by the gold bug. This young man made the long trip to Colorado and started to dig for his fortune. And he did strike gold—an unusually rich vein. His find was so large that pick-and-shovel digging was inadequate. He needed machinery. He hurried back to Maryland, breathlessly told friends of his gold strike, of the great opp...

The Doing Mindset > The Thinking Mindset

The Doing Mindset > The Thinking Mindset ~Thomas Oppong,  The Mission  | Repost " There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction.  " ~   John F. Kennedy Balancing thought and action will always be a challenge for many people. How much time should you spend thinking vs. doing? With respect to goals, projects, and other to-do items, it’s easy to get stuck too long in the thinking and planning phase. Many people get excited about a lot of ideas. But unfortunately they easily begin pushing them further back on their to-do lists, if not completely disregarding them as being unfeasible or unreaslistic. When you value “the thinking mindset” more than “the doing mindset” you will eventually end up with a note app or notebook full of dozens or even hundreds of ideas and plans. Greater percentage of them will never be done. And you will most likely not think about a lot of them again....

As A Man Thinketh ~James Allen | Book Review

As A Man Thinketh , by James Allen Originally published:   1902 Description:  "As a Man Thinketh" is a literary essay by James Allen, first published in 1902. In more than a century it has become an inspirational classic, selling millions of copies worldwide and bringing faith, inspiration, and self healing to all who have encountered it. The title comes from the Bible: "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." -- Proverbs, chapter 23, verse 7 Purchase:   Amazon Books At first glace, Proverbs 23:7 seems obvious enough and can be easily glossed over.  However, James Allen takes a closer look and studies the power our thoughts have over our lives.  Our thoughts, even have profound power over the situations we end up in.  Our thoughts can inspire to greatest or they can weigh down with the gravity of mediocrity. Mind is the Master power that moulds and makes, And Man is Mind, and evermore he takes The tool of Thought, and, shaping what he wil...

Quote to Ponder ~John Wanamaker

“ As I grow older it becomes clear that the difference between men who accomplish things and those who fail is in correct thinking, energy, and invincible determination. A single aim and a strong spirit, undistracted and untiring, seldom fall short of the goal. The man who never quits until the work is done inevitably writes his name on the roll of winners. ” ~John Wanamaker

Quote to Ponder ~Thomas Edison

“ Nearly every man who develops an idea works it up to the point where it looks impossible, and then becomes discouraged. That’s the time to become interested! ” ~Thomas Edison

Solvitur Ambulando: It Is Solved By Walking | Art of Manliness | It’s a Latin phrase that literally means, “It is solved by walking.” Or, a little more loosely, “It is solved by walking around.” Walking? “What problems have ever been solved by walking?” you may be asking yourself. Throughout history, great minds in literature, philosophy, and science have found important insight and inspiration while out on a walk. Perhaps this is because walking – at least while out in nature (which is the kind of walking many of these thinkers favored) – has been shown by modern science to improve memory and attention. Or perhaps it’s because walking simply gets the blood pumping – a hard to quantify effect of invigoration. Increase Your Return on Failure | Harvard Business Review | One of the most important—and most deeply entrenched—reasons why established companies struggle to grow is fear of failure. Indeed, in a 2015 Boston Consulting Group survey, 31% of respondents identified...
