The Get Outside Friday | Reads of The Week

America's Best Off-Road Trips | Road and Track | From mile high Colorado mountain passes to Arizona's Mojave Desert, we've highlighted some of the country's wildest and most scenic dirt and gravel drives.
Hitting the open road is a distinctly American pastime, and no season calls for it more than summer. But might we suggest a little twist on the idea? We call it the off-road trip, for the folks with four-wheel-drive and a taste for adventure—not to mention dust. So, with the hope to inspire you to break away from the pavement, we've compiled some of the greatest trips you can make, all (or mostly) on dirt and gravel. Here they are, in no particular order.

That’s Not Fat: How Ryan Hall Gained 40 Pounds of Muscle | Runners World | When Ryan Hall returned to the Boston Marathon in April to make appearances, all anybody could talk about was his size. Since he announced his retirement from professional running this winter, the fastest American-born marathoner has packed on almost 40 pounds.
In retirement, the fastest American-born marathoner is driven to be big and strong. Here’s his workout.

Santa Fe: Spend all day outdoors, then grab a frosty beer | Grind TV | I had barely heard of Santa Fe just two months ago. Yes, I knew it was a picturesque mountain town situated in Northern New Mexico that made you feel as if you’re walking back into the time of Spanish Conquistadors, but I had no idea it was such an outdoor destination, complete with craft beer and affordable upscale food.

The 20 best CDs of 2011 , by Brian Q. Newcomb It's that time of year when lists by the dozens start making their way into magazines, blogs, tweets and over the airwaves.  I'm adding to all of that by forwarding this one along.  In fact, I may even add to those before the years is up.  Actually, I probably won't add until the year has past by a few days. The list below is by Brian Q. Newcomb, one of my favorite music critics. I'm not a fan of everyone on his list, but respect his musical tastes enough to give them a spin (Thank you Spotify).  Some I have been a fan of for years and other will be a discovery.  I'm looking forward to what I will hear.
