#22Kill

Today is my last day of doing the #22KILL 22 push-ups for 22 days challenge.

I first heard about #22KILL on Twitter, seeing a post by George P. Bush: @georgepbush: Today I started my #22killchallenge to help raise awareness for the 22 #Veterans we lose to suicide everyday. Read his complete post.

So, being a fellow crossfitter from the same box, as well as some other reasons, I wanted to join.

Turns out that since 2013, #22KILL is a global movement created by veterans with a mission to:

  • Honor those who serve(d)
  • Raise awareness to veteran suicide and mental health issues such as PTS and TBI
  • Educate the public about current veteran-related topics and issues
  • Recruit Veteran Advocates aka “Battle Buddies”
  • Support various veteran empowerment programs; i.e. Honor Courage Commitment, Inc. (HCC), Equest Hooves for Heroes, Brain Treatment Foundation, Center for BrainHealth, REACT, Adaptive Training Foundation, and more.

Sadly, it wasn't until I worked for Governor Perry that I really understood or began to pay attention to sacrifice and service those in the military make.  I've had the pleasure of meeting people whose experiences have been portrayed on the silver screen and have heard the chilling stories of fear and bravery that few will hear.  Many of these men and women served on a knife's edge between nothing happening and utter chaos.  When you hear some of the situations these guys were thrown in, your response is dumbfounded.  Our typical verbal response is to say, "Thank you."  And they usually response with, "We were just doing our job."  Our thought, at that point, is that we have no excuse in feeling overwhelmed with our job again.  When we go to work, no one is actively trying to kill us while we work.

Thank you to George P. Bush for his support of veterans and for sharing this challenge.  I was able to challenge a few people in my sphere of influence and ask you to do the same.

For more information on the movement and the challenge, check out https://www.22kill.com and join in.

The 20 best CDs of 2011 , by Brian Q. Newcomb It's that time of year when lists by the dozens start making their way into magazines, blogs, tweets and over the airwaves.  I'm adding to all of that by forwarding this one along.  In fact, I may even add to those before the years is up.  Actually, I probably won't add until the year has past by a few days. The list below is by Brian Q. Newcomb, one of my favorite music critics. I'm not a fan of everyone on his list, but respect his musical tastes enough to give them a spin (Thank you Spotify).  Some I have been a fan of for years and other will be a discovery.  I'm looking forward to what I will hear.

6 Exercises for Maximum Mobility

Great Outside Magazine article on top athletes turning to CrossFit and Kelly Starrett, owner of the  MobilityWOD.com  website. In doing CrossFit and learning about physical therapy over the past few months, I've become pretty familiar with these exercises and vouch for their usefulness.  Come to think of it, I should be doing these more often.  I would encourage anyone who is looking to increase their over all mobility to check these out.
